Neuromuscular Dentistry
While traditional dentistry evaluates primarily the teeth, bones, and gums, neuromuscular dentistry also works with the hard tissues and the soft tissues; the muscles and nerves. Including the power source (the muscles) and the controls (the nerves) in the evaluation and treatment plan allows Dr. Manji to create the harmonious movement and function of the mouth that results in optimum oral and dental health.
Key to neuromuscular dentistry is the concept of “occlusion”, the dental term for the manner in which your teeth come together. If you suffer from “malocclusion”, the muscles, joints and nerves are working in conflict when you open and close your mouth. The muscles can strain and spasm causing facial pain, headaches, even clenching and grinding of the teeth. The joints can click, pop and grind. In addition to this sometimes debilitating pain your teeth can suffer unnecessary wear and destructive pressures.
A neuromuscular dental treatment plan consists of three main segments. First, Dr. Manji uses sophisticated diagnostic equipment to evaluate your muscles, joints and occlusal function. Once this baseline information is gathered, he will then utilize an instrument called an ulf-TENS (Ultra-Low Frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) to place the facial muscles that control the movement of the jaw into their most relaxed and optimal state. By then reevaluating your function in this state Dr. Manji can then develop a treatment plan to restore the way your teeth, muscles and nerves work together to their optimal, neuromuscular state.
With all these elements working together in harmony muscle pain and soreness and other symptoms of TMD can be eliminated. In addition, with a balanced, harmonious occlusion the stress and wear and tear on your teeth and any restorative work is significantly reduced, resulting in a longer lasting, healthier smile.
