Yes, you might think that ice might be the right thing to help with TMD because it alleviates swelling. However, heat is actually what will save you. By using a heat pack on your jaw, you can help to relax the jaw muscles that are tense and contributing to your flare up. Simply take a soft heat pack or rice bag and apply it to your face both morning and night for 5-10 minutes.

Steer Clear of Gum

If you love to chew on gum at work throughout the day, it might be time to consider getting mints instead. Because gum can cause your jaw a large amount of strain, it can contribute greatly to your TMJ flare-up. You don’t have to give up chewing gum for forever, but try to stay away from it for a few days or until you notice some relief.

Watch What You Eat

If you have a TMJ flare up it by no means that you have to go on an all liquid diet. However, it is advisable to avoid hard to chew foods like steak. Because chewing foods like steak causes an undue amount of stress on your jaw, it can lead to further discomfort and inflammation. Instead, opt for something like shredded chicken breast that is easier to chew.
