What Is BOTOX®?

Today’s Dental in Edmonton is proud to offer BOTOX®, which is renowned for its ability to reduce wrinkles on the upper third of the face. BOTOX® has been used for decades to treat involuntary eyelid spasms, but when the FDA approved it in 2002 for the aesthetic treatment of wrinkles the injectable became famous. At Today’s Dental, we use BOTOX® for the treatment of wrinkles, and for TMJ symptoms and migraine headaches.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

BOTOX® is made from the botulinum toxin type A, the same bacteria that cause botulism. Decades ago, scientists discovered that a miniscule amount of this toxin injected into a muscle could paralyze the muscle temporarily.

Dynamic wrinkles form on the skin above as a muscle contracts when we make certain facial expressions such as frowning. When Botox is injected into the muscle responsible for the wrinkle, it blocks the nerve message to the brain telling the brain to contract the muscle. Without the message, the muscle doesn’t contract, and the wrinkle doesn’t form or is far less noticeable.

What Kinds of Wrinkles Does Botox Treat?

There are two kinds of wrinkles: static wrinkles and dynamic wrinkles. Static wrinkles are on display always. They are usually the result of sun damage, collagen loss, personal habits such as smoking, and normal aging. Botox does not work on static wrinkles because they don’t involve muscle contractions. Dermal fillers are used for static wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles form from a muscle contraction under the skin when we perform certain expressions or behaviors such as squinting, frowning, showing surprise, and the like. The wrinkle forms on the skin above the muscle.

Dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, the 11s (between your brows), and forehead lines are found mainly on the upper third of the face. Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscle, so it doesn’t contract, and the wrinkle above doesn’t form.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Botox?

Botox is used in two primary methods. One is therapeutic for chronic migraine sufferers and the other is cosmetic for the reduction and prevention of wrinkles.

Migraine sufferers can be treated at any age with Botox. Botox cosmetic is most commonly used in people aged 25-65. However, younger and older people may choose to be treated as well.

How Old Should Someone Start to Using Botox?

There’s no “set” age to start using Botox. It depends on how your individual skin ages, how much sun you’ve had, and other factors. Most patients start using Botox between the ages of 35 and 40.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Because most Botox applications are around the eyes, the most common side effect is drooping of the eyelid when the Botox affects the muscle controlling the lid. This illustrates the importance of having an experienced injector such as Dr. Matrangolo, who is well versed in facial anatomy. Side effects are rare, however. More typical is some slight swelling and redness at the injection sites. But this passes in a day or two.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for My Session?

You’ll need to stop taking any medications that can thin the blood: aspirin, ibuprofen, St. John’s Wort, vitamin E, fish oil or Omega-3, and ginkgo biloba. Between Dr. Matrangolo and yourself, you need to be sure Botox is the correct injectable, meaning you have dynamic wrinkles to address. If you have static wrinkles, dermal fillers may be a better choice. Be totally transparent with Dr. Matrangolo as to medications you are taking, allergies, medical conditions, any recent medical procedures, any recent Botox injections, if you’re pregnant, and anything else that would seem pertinent.

Does It Hurt?

Dr. Matrangolo administers Botox with a very tiny needle. Most patients compare the feeling of the injections to a slight pinch. Still, if you desire, we can apply topical numbing cream before your session.

When Will I See My Results With Botox?

Your results with Botox are not immediate. This is because Botox needs to get to work paralyzing the wrinkle-creating muscle. Usually, it takes from 24 to 48 hours for the Botox to fully stop the muscle from contracting. At that point, you’ll see your full results, and they will last up to four months.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Botox temporarily blocks the muscles that form wrinkles on the upper third of the face. At a certain point, the body absorbs the now-inert Botox, and the wrinkle will return. In most patients, Botox lasts from 3-4 months. At that point, you’ll need another Botox session with Dr. Matrangolo to keep the wrinkles at bay. After repeated Botox sessions, the facial muscles get conditioned to Botox and results lengthen for many people.

Is Botox Expensive?

Like most other services, there is a range in Botox pricing. The Price of Botox will usually range from $7-$12/unit. 150 units is used in therapeutic Botox to treat migraines and headaches. For Botox cosmetic the range of units is based on the individual’s needs and range from 15-150 units; the average being about 50 units.
