Modern day parents are constantly scouring the internet to learn whether something they overheard another parent talk about at the supermarket is fact or fiction. Because parenting doesn’t come with a manual on how to do what and why it can sometimes seem like you’re pulling things out of thin air. As one of the things that many new parents are unsure of, it’s whether or not fluoride toothpaste is good or bad for toddlers. To help you answer this question, we have created a brief article. Read on to learn more.

What Is Fluoride?

Before we delve into whether or not fluoride is good or bad to use on toddlers, it’s good to know what fluoride is. Fluoride is an organic compound that is used primarily in toothpaste, dental products, and even in tap water to prevent tooth decay. By strengthening your tooth’s enamel, fluoride is considered to be your number one defense against cavities.

Is Fluoride Bad For Toddlers?

In small amounts, the answer to this question is “no.” Toddlers who use fluoride toothpaste are less likely to develop cavities or enamel erosion than those who don’t use fluoride toothpaste. Toddlers under the age of two should only be using a grain of rice size amount on their toothbrush both morning and night (this amount is considered to be safe enough for them to swallow). Then, as your child can spit things out and is communicative, you can pay up this amount to about the size of a pea.

Fluoride toothpaste is recommended for both children and adults. By strengthening your tooth’s enamel, fluoride is a natural way to fight against cavities and other oral related conditions. As long as your child is using the proper amount of fluoride toothpaste, it is completely safe.
