Posted Oct 15th, 2018

If you suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, then you know just how uncomfortable it can make daily tasks such as chewing or talking to be. This article will discuss how you can use massage to get relief from your TMD.

As one of the easiest and most effective ways to help break up the tension in your jaw and help you to function like normal once again, massage is a great treatment option. This article will discuss how you can use massage to get relief from your TMD. Read on to learn more.

Why Massage?

If you have a hurt or sore back, the first thing you want to do is get a massage, right? And, as an area of your body where you tend to hold a lot of stress and pressure (that’s one of the reasons why you have TMD in the first place) massage will help to break up that pressure and any lactic acid that may be forming in your jaw muscles and joints.

How Do I Massage?

When you think of massage, you may think that you are going to use some intense kneading motion to get the best form of relief. However, when it comes to massaging the small bones in your face, you aren’t going to need to apply that kind of pressure. Instead, simply just take your index and middle finger to form a straight line. Then, with those two fingers, apply pressure where your jawbone connects and massage it in a circular motion. At first, you will more than likely feel a lot of pressure and even some pain, but as you work through it, the pain and pressure will subside. Additionally, in between your massaging, move your jaw from side to side to loosen up the muscles in your face.

Massaging your TMJ will help to treat your TMD. To get the best results from massage, try to massage your TMJ a few times a day until your symptoms subside. Contact Today’s Dental to learn more about other TMD treatments or to schedule an appointment with one of our doctors.
